Colorado Arts and Science Magazine<\/em><\/a> wrote an article about Leslie Irvine<\/a> (Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado at Boulder) and Cameron Whitley\u2019s<\/a> (Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Western Washington University) research on the loss of companion animals in the Marshall Fire that was overlooked by public officials and the news media. They found that \u201cthe wildfire\u2026killed more than 1,000 companion animals who were trapped in homes\u201d, however, two months after the fire only 16% of news stories published mentioned animals. Whitley and Irvine shed light on how these companion animals \u201c…don\u2019t fit into breaking news. But they shape everyday life for years\u2026for people with animals, the disaster often continues for the rest of those animals\u2019 lives\u2014through toxic exposure, long\u2011term illness and ongoing [unrecognized] grief.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Conversation<\/em><\/a> <\/em>recently published an article by Emily Huddart<\/a> (Associate Head and Professor of Sociology at University of British Columbia) and Tony Silva<\/a> (Associate Professor of Sociology at University of British Columbia) on how political orientation impacts opinions on climate policy.\u00a0 Examining the range of climate opinions on the political right, they found that affective polarization drove the variation: \u201cNegative feelings toward the left and positive feelings toward the right were by far the strongest predictors of climate policy attitudes.\u201d Huddart and Silva explain that \u201cIf opposition to climate policy is rooted in social and political identity, then strategies for building support need to reflect that reality\u2026this will mean finding core needs that Canadians have in common and seeking policies that can have climate benefits while meeting those core needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pare-Poupant\u2019s book investigates society\u2019s relationship with garbage, drawing from his graduate study in sociology. It is \u201cA Montreal garbageman\u2019s sharp and funny memoir\/expos\u00e9, in which he attempts to convince people to \u2018stop imagining that your garbage magically disappears\u2026\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
