Gans was known for his sociological work on urban and suburban life, social policy, and the news media, including the influential books <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commentary.org\/articles\/michael-parenti\/the-urban-villagers-by-herbert-j-gans\/\"><em>The Urban Villagers<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/the-levittowners\/9780231178877\/\"><em>The Levittowners<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/titles\/herbert-j-gans\/the-war-against-the-poor\/9780465019915\/?lens=basic-books\"><em>The War Against the Poor<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nupress.northwestern.edu\/9780810122376\/deciding-whats-news\/\"><em>Deciding What\u2019s News<\/em><\/a>. Gans was also a liberal activist\u2013opposing the VIetnam war and supporting freedom of the press\u2013and a proponent for participant observation and publicly-accessible writing. Essig noted how masculinity and concerns about gender play into authoritarianism: \u201c[E]very dictator we look at, had anxiety about masculinity. That\u2019s true for Mussolini and Stalin, as well as contemporary leaders. Today, they\u2019ve created this monstrous figure, \u201cgender,\u201d to explain the failure of masculinity. For Donald Trump it\u2019s \u201cgender ideology,\u201d this idea that we\u2019re trying to corrupt the children.\u201d In the podcast project, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.middlebury.edu\/feminismfascismfuture\/\"><em>Feminism, Fascism, and the Future<\/em><\/a>, Essig and colleagues explore these themes across multiple national case studies. Canizales<\/a> (Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California- Berkeley) explores legal policies and cultural landscape that shape the lives of undocumented young people in California.
