While most government aid recipients are White, many people \u201cincorrectly presume that these programs support mostly Black people.\u201d Thus, negative views toward Black people can undermine support for social welfare programs. Vilbig found that \u201cimproved attitudes toward Black people between 2012 and 2020, more than any other measure, explained increased support for welfare programs during that same period.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a has-medium-font-size\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asanet.org\/\">American Sociological Association<\/a> and the American Federation of Teachers filed a lawsuit challenging a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/media\/document\/dear-colleague-letter-sffa-v-harvard-109506.pdf\">&#8220;Dear Colleague Letter&#8221;<\/a> warning schools that federal funding would be pulled if they consider race in \u201cadmissions, hirings, financial aid, scholarships, discipline policy and all other aspects of student, academic and campus life.\u201d ASA President <a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.wustl.edu\/people\/adia-harvey-wingfield\">Adia Harvey Wingfield<\/a> commented: \u201cThis memo doesn\u2019t just hinder sociologists from doing our jobs or merely violate our right to free speech\u2014 it inflicts a profound disservice upon students who gain from a more comprehensive understanding of the world and upon society as a whole that benefits from our discoveries about human behavior.\u201d This story was covered by <a
