Carlee Purdum<\/a> (Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Houston) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arch.tamu.edu\/staff\/tara-goddard\/\">Tara Goddard<\/a> (Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture &amp; Urban Planning at Texas A&amp;M University) wrote an article for <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/jails-and-prisons-often-fail-to-protect-incarcerated-people-during-natural-disasters-241209\"><em>The Conversation<\/em><\/a> on how jails and prisons fail to protect incarcerated people during natural disasters. \u201cPeople who are incarcerated can\u2019t take protective actions, such as evacuating or securing their belongings,\u201d they describe. \u201cThey have no say in decisions that the system makes for them.\u201d Carceral facilities are often not evacuated due to facility designs that make it difficult for people to exit quickly or a lack of available sheltering locations. The story quoted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/author\/kathryn-jezer-morton\/\">Kathryn Jezer-Morton<\/a> (Sociologist and Columnist for <em>The Cut<\/em>) on how celebrities and influencers pose for photos while pregnant. McMillan Cottom describes that online groups don\u2019t map cleanly to traditional political poles and are racially and ethnically diverse. \u201cTrump did not win over [ ] minority and young voters because he figured out how to appeal to their identity,\u201d McMillan Cottom argues. Rather, \u201che excelled at tapping into the information ecosystems \u2014 social media, memes and the cultish language of overlapping digital communities \u2014 where minority and young voters <em>express<\/em> their identity. national holiday honoring Black struggles for freedom in Brazil. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edwardtelles.com\/\">Edward Telles<\/a> (Professor of Sociology at the University of California Irvine) commented that although Brazil has the largest population of people of African descent of any country outside the continent of Africa, Brazil\u2019s Black population has been \u201cinvisibilized until recently.\u201d Telles explains that leaders in Brazilian media, government, and businesses were almost entirely White, but \u201cthat is slowly beginning to change.\u201d This story was covered by <a
