Sonnevend distinguishes charisma \u2013 which requires distance from an audience \u2013 from charm \u2013 which requires proximity. Charm makes political figures appear \u201caccessible, authentic, and relatable.\u201d Sonnevend describes that charm is becoming increasingly important in our modern media environment: \u201cIt has become increasingly possible to give almost continuous access to politicians\u2014or that\u2019s the illusion. Think of our phones, these totemic objects we all carry\u2014the intimacy of sitting in bed with the screen close to your face, watching a politician record a video or a livestream of themselves with their own phone. The book explores how \u201csymbolic capitalists\u201d\u2013academics, journalists, lawyers, administrators, and other elites who are committed to social justice\u2013have never been \u201cwoke,\u201d because they are disconnected from the marginalized communities they aim to support.
