Beamish<\/a> (Professor of Sociology at the University of California-Davis) wrote an article for <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/americans-used-to-unite-over-tragic-events-and-now-are-divided-by-them-227842\"><em>the Conversation<\/em><\/a> on how Americans\u2019 understanding of tragic events has changed in the 21st Century. Tragedies were often explained in reference to \u201cGod, fate, bad luck, blameless accidents or\u2026individual responsibility\u201d in the 20th Century. Now there is a focus on assigning social blame (where \u201csocietal institutions such as the government, industry, civil society and even American culture are held responsible\u201d). White is best known for his work on <a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/paperback\/9780691120386\/markets-from-networks\">the interplay between social networks and market structures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chains-Opportunity-Harrison-C-White\/dp\/0674437195\">vacancy chains and career progression<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/paperback\/9780691137155\/identity-and-control\">how identities and social structures control individual and group action<\/a>. Jones<\/a>\u2019 (Assistant Professor of Sociology and American Studies at Rutgers) new book argues that the lack of racial diversity among congressional staffers perpetuates inequalities. \u201cThe unequal racial makeup of congressional staff is one of the most important problems subverting our multiracial democracy,\u201d he writes. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/04\/books\/review\/there-is-no-ethan-anna-akbari.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> review of the book notes that although Akbari\u2019s dissertation focused on \u201caspirational identity,\u201d she withholds her sociological perspective until the epilogue. There, \u201cshe poses fascinating questions: What are the ethical boundaries of digital platforms? Is lying to create intimacy a violation of consent? When does inauthenticity become evil?
