The Knot, a popular wedding website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/wedding-spend-reaches-all-time-high-as-couples-look-to-make-the-ultimate-personal-statement-according-to-the-knot-2015-real-weddings-study-300246367.html\">saw a jump from 29-40% from 2009 to 2015<\/a>. In a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2019\/04\/more-couples-having-friends-officiate-their-weddings\/586750\/\">article<\/a> in <em>The Atlantic, <\/em>sociologist <a href=\"https:\/\/soc.appstate.edu\/faculty-staff\/ellen-lamont-phd\">Ellen Lamont<\/a> explains that this trend is especially popular among young couples:<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cMore and more, Millennials are identifying the things in their life that are \u2018generic\u2019 and finding a way to make them meaningful, personalized, and special.\u201d <br \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And this is part of a larger trend forgoing traditions around marriage. According to Lamont, <br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe expectations for marriage have shifted, and sociologists refer to this as kind of a \u2018deinstitutionalization\u2019 of marriage&#8230;Basically meaning that the social norms that guided marriage have become more negotiable, flexible, and individualized.\u201d<br \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, couples are opting for non-religious ceremonies, choosing not to have the bride\u2019s father give her away, and creating unique last names to share. In short, these are ways young couples construct weddings that are meaningful for them.
