Presiding over a long running national <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-46999668\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Maduro remains in power nearly a year after an election that much of his political opposition, the United States, and many U.S. allies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2018\/05\/21\/612918548\/venezuelas-maduro-wins-boycotted-elections-amid-charges-of-fraud\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deemed fraudulent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Much of Maduro\u2019s opposition claims the presidency should go to his political rival, Juan Guaid\u00f3. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/world\/2019\/2\/18\/18229695\/venezuela-trump-military-guaido-maduro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible intervention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the United States remains on the table, and there is a long history of U.S. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5512005\/venezuela-us-intervention-history-latin-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intervention in the nation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, if it happens again, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2019\/01\/30\/u-s-intervention-could-be-maduros-lifeline\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could garner more support for Maduro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Guaid\u00f3 now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/the_americas\/guaido-says-hell-be-returning-to-venezuela-for-nationwide-protests-monday\/2019\/03\/03\/0642d9e2-3dc8-11e9-85ad-779ef05fd9d8_story.html?utm_term=.40955443505f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calls for national protest against Maduro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/f60b33eaf80c462382f2077cafe8827f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top military generals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a significant portion of Venezuelans, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignaffairs.com\/articles\/venezuela\/2019-02-25\/will-maduros-supporters-abandon-him\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chavistas<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remain at the president\u2019s side. A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/venezuela-washington-funded-counterrevolution\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by sociologists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timgill924?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim Gill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latam.ufl.edu\/people\/center-based-faculty\/rebecca-hanson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebecca Hanson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argues Guaid\u00f3 should attend to the plights of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chavistas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8212; historic backers of Maduro\u2019s far-left predecessor Hugo Ch\u00e1vez &#8211;for any presidential transition to be successful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gill argues that Guaid\u00f3\u2019s initial rise was due in part to the U.S. influence on student movements that Guaid\u00f3 was a part of meant to rid Ch\u00e1vez of his office, and enable the U.S. to retain a foothold in political and economic matters in Venezuela. Guaid\u00f3\u2019s association with the United States comes at a price. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanson\u2019s decade-long work with Venezuelans in Caracas suggests that even though many have continued to oppose Maduro, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;some would prefer that [Guaid\u00f3] \u2018put his house in order\u2019 without outside intervention\u2014that he demonstrate his ability to generate support within Venezuela.\u201d <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it is Guaid\u00f3 or Maduro in power, many Venezuelans believe that their country will be under the service of the United States or Russia and China, respectively. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gill and Hanson argue that Guaid\u00f3 should instead attend more to his own people &#8212; such as offering free healthcare and the protection of human rights &#8212; which would serve the poor and working class through and after his transition into power. They also state this strategy should include aligning himself with former president, Hugo Ch\u00e1vez and his followers, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chavistas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ch\u00e1vez remains a political icon beyond his death due to his legacy as an advocate for the poor and his outspokenness against American intervention in Venezuela. To these ends, Gill and Hanson conclude:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no political future in Venezuela without <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chavista<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> participation, and, one way or another, the opposition and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chavismo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will eventually need to work together toward a new future.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As troops leave the military in droves, Nicolas Maduro appears to be losing his grip on the presidency in Venezuela.
