In defense of the wall and the recently failed $5.7 billion Senate proposal, Trump again made comments on national security that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/trot\/2018\/01\/10\/the-immigration-crime-paradox\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contradict numerous studies and immigration scholars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the wall is not the only immigration policy proposed by the administration that could have dire social repercussions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnpost.com\/community-voices\/2018\/12\/the-trump-administrations-proposed-changes-to-the-public-charge-rule-lack-merit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent op-ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <em>MinnPost<\/em>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/minnesota\/posts\/migration-and-migrants-in-terrifying-times-confron\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an interdisciplinary team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of expert immigration scholars at the University of Minnesota, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhh.umn.edu\/directory\/ryan-allen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Allen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/jdewaard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack DeWaard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/erikalee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Lee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrislevesque.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chris Levesque<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, argues that the administrative changes to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/10\/10\/2018-21106\/inadmissibility-on-public-charge-grounds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018public charge\u2019 rule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one such policy. The \u2018public charge\u2019 rule is a policy used to evaluate non-U.S. citizen applicants for U.S. residency by how likely they are to become dependent on the government for support. The Trump administration aims to make it easier for government officials to decide an immigrant is ineligible for residency if they are in need of or use government assistance programs. The research team highlights serious consequences of such a policy: in the wake of this announcement, many legal immigrants who are entitled and in need of health and social assistance programs fail to use them out of fear. This could produce detrimental effects on public health by spreading certain diseases across communities and reducing economic productivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research team, which includes community stakeholders and activists, is committed to igniting critical discussions that address these challenges faced by individuals and families who immigrate to U.S. communities. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twincities.com\/2018\/12\/12\/jack-dewaard-we-need-persons-of-character-and-integrity-to-lead-on-immigration\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sole-authored piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <em>Pioneer Press<\/em>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/jdewaard\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack DeWaard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writes, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8230;discussions and debates about U.S. immigrants, immigration and immigration policy must start with the very simple recognition that immigrants are people \u2014 often facing incredible hardships \u2014 seeking to do the best for themselves, their children and their families against a backdrop of widening inequality, both globally and within the U.S. With this as the starting point, say what you will about issues like the economic impacts of immigration&#8230;, men and women of character and integrity neither promote nor sit idly by as immigrants, including young children, are&#8230;denied their rights&#8230;in the process for doing what any person in their position would do \u2014 namely, ask for help.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even after signing a resolution to suspend the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, President Trump remains committed to delivering his long-promised southern border wall.
