The holidays and their many challenges &#8212; travel, presents, and time with extended family &#8212; are so stressful that they make people wonder whether raising children has always been this hard. A recent <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/25\/upshot\/the-relentlessness-of-modern-parenting.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">piece<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/claire-cain-miller\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claire Cain Miller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirms that parenting has indeed gotten more time-consuming and expensive. Miller draws upon an arsenal of sociological research to illustrate how and why parenting has become so relentless. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the pressure parents feel stems from wanting to pass on advantages to their children &#8212; especially since American children today are less likely to be as affluent as their parents. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/socy.umd.edu\/facultyprofile\/cohen\/philip-n\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phillip Cohen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the gap between rich and poor increases, the cost of screwing up increases. The fear is they\u2019ll end up on the other side of the divide.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, parents use \u201cintensive parenting,\u201d a child-rearing style that demands a great deal of their own time and resources. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.yale.edu\/book\/9780300076523\/cultural-contradictions-motherhood\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharon Hays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.yale.edu\/book\/9780300076523\/cultural-contradictions-motherhood\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">describes intensive parenting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cchild-centered, expert-guided, emotionally absorbing, labor intensive and financially expensive.\u201d And a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ccording to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/experts\/jennifer-glass-ph-d\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Glass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intensive parenting is rooted in the American view of child rearing as an individual &#8212; not societal &#8212; tas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> though it has begun to gain popularity in England and Australia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But not all parents engage in these efforts equally, nor are they expected to. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiana.edu\/~soc\/bios\/Jessica_Calarco.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jessica Calarco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains that intensive parenting allows affluent white mothers to ensure their children remain advantaged in society.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ddle-class black mothers also use intensive parenting strategies, but for different reasons. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/socy.umd.edu\/facultyprofile\/dow\/dawn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dawn Dow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019re making decisions to protect their kids from early experiences of racism. It\u2019s a different host of concerns that are equally intensive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The demands of intensive parenting affect mothers\u2019 lives far more than fathers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/socy.umd.edu\/facultyprofile\/sayer\/liana\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liana Sayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s research on American <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/sf\/article\/84\/1\/285\/2234895\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time use diaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that the time women spend parenting cuts into their sleep, time alone with their partners and friends, leisure time and housework. Moreover, while fathers today have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/complexities-brief-report\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the amount of time they spend with their children, mothers still spend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0038038511416169\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">significantly more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, drawing on research by over a dozen sociologists, Miller shows us that we are not wrong to find intensive parenting problematic. Not only does this parenting style disproportionately burden lower income families &#8212; and mothers in particular &#8212; but we\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc.isr.umich.edu\/pubs\/abs\/14858\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not even sure it is effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in passing advantages on to the next generation. By stressing the importance of individualistic approaches to parenting, we fail to seek structural solutions that could ease the burdens of working mothers. In the words of sociologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.wustl.edu\/people\/caitlyn-collins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caitlyn Collins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, intensive parenting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cdistracts from the real questions, like why don\u2019t we have a safe place for all kids to go when they\u2019re done with school before parents get home from work?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After the holidays, many parents breathe a collective sigh of relief.
