One step toward compromise is understanding what drives attitudes about gun control. Conventional wisdom suggests attitudes about gun control are closely tied to other political views, party affiliation, or past experiences with using firearms for hunting or personal protection. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/citizen-protectors-9780199347551?cc=us&amp;lang=en&amp;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sociologists have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that attitudes about guns are also cultural, tapping into deep assumptions about what it means to protect and provide for loved ones. Now, a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2378023118790189\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0finds an even more surprising link: attitudes about guns are closely associated with core assumptions about religion in society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2018\/07\/25\/why-some-christians-dont-believe-in-gun-control-they-think-god-handed-down-the-second-amendment\/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.6d1e8f28a6bb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0<em>Washington Post<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cbshs\/faculty-staff\/profiles\/ALW6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Whitehead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/landonschnabel.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Landon Schnabel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/soc.publishpath.com\/sam-perry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel Perry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> summarize the findings from their study: <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Americans who subscribe to Christian nationalism believe that America has always been \u2015 and should always be \u2015 distinctively Christian in its national identity, sacred symbols and public policies&#8230;the connection between Christian nationalism and gun control attitudes proves stronger than we expected. It turns out that how intensely someone adheres to Christian nationalism is one of the strongest predictors of whether someone supports gun control. One\u2019s political party, religiosity, gender, education or age doesn\u2019t matter.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings highlight how attitudes about guns are connected to some Americans&#8217; core sense of social identity.
