While having two income earners may be necessary, it also comes with its own stressors and difficulties. In a recent <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/capital\/story\/20171113-the-special-skills-power-couples-cultivate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, BBC spoke with sociologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/phylmoen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phyllis Moen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about how dual-working couples make it work. Moen says that the most influential factor in leading a high quality of life is not having kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf they had children, either one or both partners were stressed,\u201d she says. \u201cThe things that ameliorate stress from dual-working couples is having a job with considerable flexibility, and not working long hours if possible. Today that is not always possible. So it\u2019s important to make a commitment to both careers, which can be very hard to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moen cautions that when both partners have careers, one person usually ends up making sacrifices for the other. However, this becomes easier if the sacrifice is temporary. Couples can \u201cleapfrog\u201d so that both careers take priority at different times over the course of the relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCommitting to both careers often means that one person will have to sacrifice for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other \u2026 but these sacrifices should be taken in turns with long-term goals in mind. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People found that one career might have to come first. And it wasn\u2019t and shouldn\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">necessarily be the same career over time.
