Photo by Austin Kirk, Flickr CC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2017\/oct\/05\/white-sports-fans-nfl-black-athletes-race-protest\">article<\/a> in\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> documents the recent backlash against<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> former Baltimore Ravens linebacker <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ray Lewis for kneeling during the National Anthem before his team\u2019s game. Many fans once lauded Lewis for his dedication and hard work for the team, enough to have a statue raised in his honor outside the team\u2019s stadium. However, now that Lewis has joined in on the kneeling, more than 80,000 individuals have signed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/baltimore-ravens-remove-the-ray-lewis-statue-in-front-of-ravens-stadium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to remove the bronze statue. This case is in no way unique, as a number of historic examples from American baseball, basketball, and boxing reflect a tendency in the United States to condemn black athletes who seek racial justice. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sociologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/hartm021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Douglas Hartmann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that people have been trying to protect the \u201csacred space of sport\u201d since the late 1960s. Many consider sports as \u201cnot the right place\u201d for vocalizing political issues, and when players violate this sanctity, they often face severe repercussions from the public arena.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A notable case was that of the 1968 Olympics, where before the games a number of black American athletes refused to participate, and two that did clenched their fists and bowed their heads on the medal podium. Public response towards these athletes was malicious. According to Hartmann,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey got threats from the beginning. They reported death threats, hate mail. The attitude of a lot of the sportswriters, especially before the Olympics, was \u2018How dare you, in this arena that\u2019s treated you so well.\u2019 That they were enemies of America.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Lewis and the 1968 Olympics point to the importance of activism in the face of national or international political symbols, and both end with the public denouncing these individuals and their actions.
