A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/monkey-cage\/wp\/2017\/09\/14\/this-is-what-happens-when-americans-are-told-about-rising-inequality\/?utm_term=.93d7e181dd94\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discusses research on whether income inequality impacts Americans\u2019 support for certain economic policies. A <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/114\/36\/9593.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/stonecenter\/Leslie-McCall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leslie McCall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/psychology.yale.edu\/people\/jennifer-richeson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer A. Richeson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that when presented with data on economic inequality, Americans develop skepticism about the existence of actual economic opportunity, and will tend to favor policies that promote equality. Using experimental data, the researchers found that when presented with information on income inequality, 58% of Americans surveyed responded more favorably toward policies proposing decreasing the pay gap (in contrast to 51% for those who did not receive information). The authors write,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Americans tend to support greater spending on education when their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/perspectives-on-politics\/article\/americans-social-policy-preferences-in-the-era-of-rising-inequality\/A3D88AB1C18D89ED981EB751123FC449\">opposition to inequality<\/a> rises or<a href=\"http:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/abs\/10.1086\/686025\"> inequality itself<\/a> rises, consistent with a link between concerns about inequality and opportunity. But this pattern may be <a href=\"https:\/\/politicalbehavior.wordpress.com\/2017\/03\/10\/the-political-implications-of-american-concerns-about-economic-inequality\/\">limited<\/a> to particular time periods and does not extend to support for other kinds of spending or government redistribution generally<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research suggests that Americans are fully capable of linking income inequality with economic opportunity and that efforts should not be made to avoid discussing one or the other. The authors conclude,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For this reason, the instinct to focus on economic opportunity instead of inequality seems misplaced.
