Their findings indicate that the belief that America is a Christian nation may both predict support for Trump and be connected to intolerant views of other groups. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sociologists\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemson.edu\/cbshs\/faculty-staff\/profiles\/ALW6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Whitehead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/soc.publishpath.com\/Default.aspx?p=991325&amp;Add=Show+Post&amp;Key=Show+Post&amp;ContentID=2258383&amp;PostID=1176706&amp;shortcut=sam-perry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel Perry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsu.edu\/cas\/sociology\/facultystaff\/bakerjo.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joseph Baker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that Christian nationalism was \u201cstrongly and positively associated with voting for Trump,\u201d and they emphasized that Christian nationalism is not simply another measure of religiosity. Whitehead told ThinkProgress,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For this study, when we look at a lot of the normal ways we measure religiosity, at the end of the day, none of them really predict a vote for Trump except Christian nationalism. It didn\u2019t matter if you were evangelical or mainline [Christian], it didn\u2019t matter if you went to church a lot or a little, what mattered was whether you think America is a Christian nation.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whitehead notes that an important part of this research regards findings about the ways Christian nationalism interacts with other ideologies, and ThinkProgress reached out to sociologist \u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/edgell\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penny Edgell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for further development of this connection. Edgell\u2019s ongoing work with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/stewa777\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evan Stewart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.cla.umn.edu\/directory\/profiles\/dele0068?search_results_referer_url=%2Fdirectory%2Fresults%3Fpage%3D5%26q%3DDemocracy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Delehanty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that support for &#8220;public religious expression,\u201d a variable that measures the belief that religion should be an integral part of public life and deliberation, is associated with intolerance against a variety of groups. Edgell emphasized the need for more analysis of white Christian nationalism, especially its role in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/pennyedgell.com\/blog\/2017\/3\/30\/there-was-no-evangelical-vote-absenting-race-in-research-on-religion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propagating ideologies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like Islamophobia and xenophobia.
