In recent weeks many more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/24\/sports\/nfl-trump-anthem-protests.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">players knelt, locked arms, or stayed in the locker room<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the anthem in response to Trump\u2019s speech and series of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ftw.usatoday.com\/2017\/09\/donald-trump-twitter-nfl-nba-steph-curry-sports-national-anthem-kneeling-tweets\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tweets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. During the flurry of media attention on the NFL, scholars <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rashawnray.com\/bio\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashawn Ray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicolevancleve.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicole Gonzalez Van Cleve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/amp\/oped-will-nfl-stand-trump-acknowledge-dignity-its-players-n803666\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op-ed for NBC News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about not losing sight of the original purpose of the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of focusing on the political implications of the president\u2019s tweets or changes in protests over the past week (such as owners joining their players on the field), Ray and Van Cleve reiterate <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rashawnray.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Why-Police-Kill-Black-Males-with-Impunity_Gilbert-and-Ray.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SociologistRay\/status\/876126537350819840\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violent repercussions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of racial bias in policing. They emphasize that black athletes, even NFL stars, are subject to the same dangers of racial profiling as all other African Americans. In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SociologistRay\/status\/912131365117841408\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSNBC spot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discussing the Op-ed, Ray told the panel,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe really have to reorient the narrative. This isn\u2019t about someone standing or sitting, this is about the fact that black lives matter. This is about the fact that football players, basketball players, baseball players, once they leave those stadiums they are black and brown men.
