His research is part of the new but growing field of \u201cmasculinity studies,\u201d and in a recent interview with <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/feb\/27\/michael-kimmel-masculinity-far-right-angry-white-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he talks about his book <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/16197150-angry-white-men\">Angry White Men: American Masculinity at the End of an Era<\/a>. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His research specifically looks at how people join, and leave, white-supremacist or neo-Nazi groups, and he states that masculinity is an important part of the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimmel talks at length about many parts of this picture, including the men\u2019s rights movement on the Internet, the role of testosterone (or the lack thereof) when it comes to men being disproportionately aggressive, and why \u201cmen are naturally aggressive\u201d is a poor argument to defend domestic abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the interview, Kimmel explains how feelings of\u00a0\u201caggrieved entitlement,\u201d a sense of a loss for masculine power and tradition, can stimulate feelings of humiliation. In turn, this can drive men to join local neo-Nazi groups. There, the camaraderie and sense of community can validate a neophyte\u2019s masculinity, convincing him to stay. In essence, masculinity is very tied up in how people join and leave hate groups and extremist enclaves. As Kimmel states, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe camaraderie of the community validates their masculinity, and \u2013 even more importantly than that \u2013 gives them a sacred mission.
