However, a <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2017\/02\/only-men-earn-way-more-money-from-going-to-fancy-schools.html?mid=full-rss-thecut\">new study discussed in <em>New York Magazine<\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0shows that this potential financial payoff is not equally shared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study, which was conducted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Dirk_Witteveen\">Dirk Witteveen<\/a> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/Page-Elements\/Academics-Research-Centers-Initiatives\/Doctoral-Programs\/Urban-Education\/Faculty-Bios\/Paul-Attewell\">Paul Attewell<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0reveals that there is\u00a0an increase in pay for those who attend\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2013\/04\/04\/business\/economy\/economix-selectivity-table.html?_r=2&amp;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher tiered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> universities, but that women from these elite universities make about 16% less than their male counterparts. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes a variety of factors that might contribute to\u00a0this trend, including different college major choices, but the authors emphasize\u00a0that \u201cfull-time working women graduates earn a lot less than their male counterparts from equivalent colleges.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>New York Magazine\u00a0<\/em>article also references sociologist\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kellogg.northwestern.edu\/faculty\/directory\/rivera_lauren.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauren Rivera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who came to similar conclusions in her own study. Rivera explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe people doing the hiring at fancy firms (read: old, privileged white guys) assume that accomplished women are\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0after a husband and some kids, meaning they\u2019re not down to scrape out long hours, meaning they get passed over for a dude whose background better reflects theirs. Privilege is invisible, and it replicates itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The political debate over closing the gender wage gap is far from over; just this week, a Utah Republican <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2017\/02\/19\/utah-republican-argues-against-equal-pay-for-women-its-bad-for-families-and-society\/?utm_term=.d3d33ca62b3e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued against<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> equal pay for equal work, reasoning that it prevented mothers from remaining in the home.
