But the media most often focuses on one particular trauma when veterans commit violent crimes\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Sociologist\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mta.ca\/Community\/Academics\/Faculty_of_Social_Sciences\/Sociology\/Faculty_and_Staff\/Faculty_and_Staff\/\">Ardath Whynackt<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/the180\/don-t-blame-violence-on-ptsd-how-to-argue-about-the-carbon-tax-and-questions-we-have-about-canada-150-1.3922662\/media-too-quick-to-blame-family-violence-on-ptsd-1.3922663\">talked to\u00a0<em>CBC Radio<\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0about how the media&#8217;s focus on PTSD can be counterproductive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start, Whynackt points out that there is no\u00a0evidence that PTSD makes an individual dangerous, despite the number of movies, TV shows, and characters wherein \u201cPTSD\u201d leads characters to do something crazy. The media&#8217;s obsession with PTSD often obscures deeper issues, like the way we socialize men to be aggressive in the first place. For example, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news broke in early January that a Canadian\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/four-found-dead-upper-big-tracadie-home-1.3920457\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veteran murdered his family and committed suicide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> afterwards; it was later revealed that this man was suffering from PTSD and the media focused solely on that aspect of the case. Whynackt explains,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;When we talk about PTSD and we frame the conversation in really narrow terms around a lack of care for veterans &#8211; and I do agree there is a lack of care for veterans and we do need more &#8211; but we end up talking only about him as if he wasn&#8217;t accountable for his actions &#8230; If we want to talk about programs and services to prevent incidents like this, we need to be talking about not only trauma supports for\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>men, not just veterans, but we also need to be talking about the ways in which\u00a0we socialize young men to take their distress out on others using anger and violence.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Serving in the military can lead to an array of physical injuries or\u00a0psychological traumas.
