Much of this shift is due to the influx of Asian and Latin American immigrants, many of whom migrate to traditional gateway cities such as Los Angeles or New York. At the same time, however, many of these immigrants go to smaller urban areas, suburbs, and rural communities. Using an abundance of research by sociologists, including\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soc.cornell.edu\/people\/faculty\/lichter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Lichter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailman.columbia.edu\/people\/our-faculty\/mc2028\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merlin Chowkwanyun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soc.uic.edu\/sociology\/people\/faculty\/krysan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Krysan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiana.edu\/~soc\/bios\/Samuel_Kye.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel Kye<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a recent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2017\/1\/18\/14296126\/white-segregated-suburb-neighborhood-cartoon\">Vox article<\/a>\u00a0reports\u00a0that alongside<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0this increasing diversification in suburbia is a parallel phenomenon: white Americans are beginning to self-segregate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lichter\u2019s research indicates that although residential segregation within cities has remained stable for the past 25 years, segregation elsewhere has become increasingly common. Krysan\u2019s findings suggest that white residents move towards less diverse neighborhoods than Hispanic or African American residents. Specifically, white families are moving to gated communities or more predominantly white rural areas, what Licther labels \u201cexburbs.\u201d\u00a0Krysan states, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In the last several decades, the demographic characterization is less about the flight \u2014 less about whites fleeing a certain type of neighborhood \u2014 and more about decisions that people make when looking at where they&#8217;re going to move next.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This\u00a0most recent iteration of segregation is distinct from the \u201cwhite flight\u201d out of cities and into the suburbs characteristic of 1960\u2019s residential segregation, and more about neighborhood choice.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than simply fleeing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">minorities, this new kind of residential self-segregation involves fleeing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a white neighborhood.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>American demographics are shifting &#8212; in less than 30 years, the majority of Americans will be nonwhite.
