While some blame\u00a0the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalonews.com\/opinion\/viewpoints\/its-not-just-about-diversity-changing-the-teaching-narrative-for-youth-of-color-20161002\">negative narratives<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that discourage many young people of color from ever considering a career in K-12 education for the lack of diversity, others point to\u00a0weak <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/minority-teachers_us_57d8730ae4b0fbd4b7bc3d40\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But which students want teachers of color in the first place? Well, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/edr.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2016\/09\/27\/0013189X16671718.abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent study finds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/steinhardt.nyu.edu\/faculty\/Hua-Yu_Sebastian_Cherng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hua-Yu Sebastian Cherng<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/steinhardt.nyu.edu\/faculty\/Peter_F._Halpin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter Halpin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0recently examined how sixth- through ninth-grade students from more than 300 schools across the country answered 30-question surveys about their teachers. Students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds reported significantly more favorable perceptions of their Latino teachers in all seven survey categories, and more favorable perceptions of black teachers in at least two or three of these categories. These findings held even when Cherng and Halpin accounted\u00a0for students\u2019 age, gender, socioeconomic background, and academic performance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line? Students of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> backgrounds prefer teachers of color. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cherng, a former math teacher turned sociologist, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/ed\/2016\/10\/07\/496717541\/study-finds-students-of-all-races-prefer-teachers-of-color\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the findings are surprising:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI thought student awareness of the racial hierarchy would influence the results,\u201d in favor of whites, he says. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He suspects that teachers of color may draw on their experiences to contextualize issues like race and gender for their students in a variety of disciplines, and says his future research will examine the relationship between teachers\u2019 multicultural beliefs and their strengths in the classroom. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An ongoing concern within K-12 education is\u00a0how to go about diversifying the teaching profession.
