Trump has a\u00a0realistic opportunity to become the next president of the United States, but a recent jump in immigrants applying for citizenship this year might change the outcome once November comes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/pere\/pastor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manuel Pastor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professor of sociology and director of the Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usc.edu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recently wrote an <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-pastor-voter-registration-rates-of-newly-naturalized-citizens-20160926-snap-story.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LA Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the increasing number of applications for U.S. citizenship. \u00a0From March to June of 2016, the number of immigrants who applied to become naturalized citizens is up 32% over the previous year, and m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any of these naturalized citizens might be eligible to vote this coming November. \u00a0A new report from the Center for the Study of Immigration Integration examined how significant an impact this increase in naturalized citizens might have if they are eligible to vote in the 2016 presidential election. Pastor explains,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[T]he newly naturalized voters\u00a0we counted\u00a0could make a difference.\u00a0In Florida,\u00a0they\u00a0constitute more than 6% of the voting age population. In Nevada, that share is\u00a0more than 5%; in Virginia, 4%;\u00a0and in Arizona, 3%.
