One of the latest trends involves the process of mourning\u00a0through social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/2016\/08\/20\/i-miss-you-so-much-how-twitter-is-broadening-the-conversation-on-death-and-mourning\/\">University of Washington<\/a> recently covered\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soc.washington.edu\/people\/nina-cesare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nina Cesare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/soc.washington.edu\/people\/jennifer-branstad\">Jennifer Branstad<\/a>&#8216;s new research, presented for the first time at this summer&#8217;s annual sociology meetings, that finds that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0people who use Twitter to mourn a death do so more\u00a0publicly than compared to other social media sites, like Facebook, where mourning is more private. They explain,<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;While posts about death on Facebook, for example, tend to be more personal and involve people who knew the deceased &#8230;\u00a0Twitter users may not know the dead person, tend to tweet both personal and general comments about the deceased, and sometimes tie the death to broader social issues \u2014 for example, mental illness or suicide.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The researchers describe this change as an opening up of the public conversation surrounding death and mourning\u00a0and an expansion of the &#8220;inner circle&#8221; that typically mourns the death of a loved one.
