So what explains Oregon\u2019s generosity in the face of safety net rollback in other states? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic cites research from social scientists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhh.umn.edu\/directory\/joe-soss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Soss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/psc.ua.edu\/profiles\/richard-c-fording\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard C. Fording<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hunter.cuny.edu\/polsci\/faculty\/schram\/sanford-schram\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanford F. Schram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who show that democratic control of the legislature, as well as higher state wages relative to welfare benefits, are key predictors of the size of a state\u2019s social welfare net. Soss and colleagues also write how state\u2019s with a higher percentage of minority group members receiving welfare also tend to be more punitive overall. Oregon, who is 86.6 percent white, has a relatively high minimum wage, and a historically blue voting state, fits nicely with Soss and colleagues\u2019 analysis of state-level welfare spending and policy.
