What these \u201ctraditionalists\u201d fail to name among the various threats is income inequality. As described in <a href=\"http:\/\/asr.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2016\/06\/28\/0003122416653112.full.pdf+html?ijkey=JaOvg4zxBrSZY&amp;keytype=ref&amp;siteid=spasr\">research<\/a> published in the <em>American Sociological Review <\/em>and discussed on <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/2016\/07\/14\/income-inequality-nuclear-family\/\">Fortune.com<\/a>, observed increases in the rate of couples having children before marriage can be explained by changing social landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise to anyone that the middle-class is shrinking or that finding a job can be a tough gig. <a href=\"http:\/\/soc.jhu.edu\/directory\/andrew-j-cherlin\/\">Andrew Cherlin<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/melbourneinstitute.com\/staff\/dribar\/\">David C. Ribar<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/johnshopkins.academia.edu\/SuzumiYasutake\">Suzumi Yasutake\u2019s<\/a> research shows people are more likely to postpone marriage, but not parenting, if they can\u2019t get a job. So, with a distinct shortage of available living-wage jobs and growing income inequality, more and more American families are comprised of unmarried couples with children.
