{"id":57,"date":"2008-03-03T13:06:32","date_gmt":"2008-03-03T19:06:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/crawler\/2008\/03\/03\/in-the-40-years-since-the-kerner-commission-report\/"},"modified":"2008-03-03T13:18:37","modified_gmt":"2008-03-03T19:18:37","slug":"in-the-40-years-since-the-kerner-commission-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/clippings\/2008\/03\/03\/in-the-40-years-since-the-kerner-commission-report\/","title":{"rendered":"In the 40 years since the Kerner Commission Report&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Kerner Commission Report, academics and journalists have gathered for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/dailynews\/local\/20080301_Mike_Kern__Kerney_plus_40__Whats_changed_.html\">symposium at the University of Pennsylvania<\/a> to address issues of racial and socio-economic inequality in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kerner_Report\">Kerner Report<\/a> was commissioned in the 1960s in the wake of urban riots and concern over the growing racial gap in the U.S. The report&#8217;s conclusion that &#8220;our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white &#8211; separate and unequal&#8221; was shocking to much of its audience.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philly.com\/dailynews\/local\/20080301_Mike_Kern__Kerney_plus_40__Whats_changed_.html\">Philadelphia Daily News<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of what we&#8217;ve learned since Kerner is that we find ourselves in a different moment, a different place,&#8221; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bunchecenter.ucla.edu\/faculty\/faculty_hunt.html\">Darnell Hunt<\/a>, a professor of sociology at UCLA. &#8220;We&#8217;re confronted with a lot of the same problems we were confronted with in 1968.
