In a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3055288\/the-future-of-work\/why-paid-parental-leave-will-expand-in-2016\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent article for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast Company<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sociologist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelkimmel.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Kimmel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> discusses how the U.S. lags behind every other industrialized country in policies that guarantee parental leave and how he believes this contradicts \u201cfamily first\u201d ideals. \u201cSupporting families is the very definition of family values,\u201d writes Kimmel. \u201cHow can we possibly lecture others about loving and supporting families when we value our own so little?\u201d<span class=\"pull-this-mark\" id=\"pull-this-mark-5698-ex2\" style=\"display:none;\">The U.S. lags behind every other industrialized country in policies that guarantee parental leave.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One key to the gradual change that\u2019s come to cities including New York, Washington D.C., and Chicago may be a shift in male perspectives of household work. Recent surveys suggest many men want to be more involved in household duties. Despite that willingness, however, women still bear much of the burden. Consequently, fathers are often praised for more public acts of parenting, like taking children to soccer practice, while mothers are more likely to take care of unsung housework, struggling to also meet the demands of their careers. Further, researchers note that demanding careers cause <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/american-workplace-broken-stress_us_566b3152e4b011b83a6b42bd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased risks of physical and mental illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as heart disease, diabetes, and stress for everyone, not just fathers or mothers.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div class=\"pull-this-show\" id=\"pull-this-show-5698-ex1\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/div>As legislators craft a new wave of parental leave policies, many question how employers can provide a working environment to support parents and families. In a recent study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soc.umn.edu\/~moen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phyllis Moen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/iwer\/posts\/news-item-1\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erin Kelly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> studied the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/jobs\/jobs-news\/2016\/01\/21\/mit-study-proves-benefits-of-flexible-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program that allowed for increased flexibility for 700 employees at a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortune 500<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> company. The aim was to provide employees with more flexibility in attending meetings, working from home, and communicating via instant messenger. After one year, those involved in the initiative reported greater job satisfaction and lower rates of poor mental health. According to Kelly, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One important implication of this research is that workplaces can change to bring some relief to stressed out workers.
