Unfortunately, Pao\u2019s experience is <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/clippings\/2014\/10\/15\/off-the-glass-cliff\/\">far from unique<\/a>. Many female chief executives face character assassination based in large part on their gender; the anonymity of the Internet allows harassment to escalate as far as death threats. For many experts, Pao\u2019s resignation is an example of the \u201cglass cliff,\u201d a point where women rise to higher positions only to be forced out through excessive personal attacks and abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Sociologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mariannecooper.com\/\">Marianne Cooper<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/gender.stanford.edu\/\">Stanford University\u2019s Clayman Institute for Gender Research<\/a> isn\u2019t surprised by this gendered bias, telling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2015\/jul\/11\/reddit-ellen-pao-women-ceo\"><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a>, \u201cI haven\u2019t seen this kind of reaction to egregious things male CEOs have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As lead researcher for <a href=\"http:\/\/leanin.org\/book\/\">Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead<\/a>, Cooper is familiar with the gendered biases of the workplace and the use of female leaders as scapegoats for larger company problems: \u201cOftentimes, the women who inherit the problems are put in precarious positions, and if they fail, they are blamed for it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After months of abuse and harassment from users, Reddit CEO Ellen Pao resigned from the website.
