However, new research shows complaining about the weather\u2014the archetype of casual chatting\u2014may be more than just small talk.\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/getpocket.com\/redirect?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fblogs%2Fwonkblog%2Fwp%2F2014%2F11%2F24%2Fdo-democrats-and-republicans-actually-experience-the-weather-differently%2F\" target=\"_blank\"><i>The Washington Post\u00a0<\/i><\/a>reports on new research from\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/sociology.msu.edu\/faculty\/profile\/mccright-aaron\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aaron McCright<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/sociology.okstate.edu\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=61&amp;Itemid=86\" target=\"_blank\">Riley Dunlap<\/a>, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #1155cc;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.american.edu\/cas\/faculty\/xiao.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Chenyang Xiao<\/a>\u00a0which finds a significant relationship between political affiliation and perceptions about the weather. From the article:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote style=\"color: #222222;\"><p>The paper\u2026examined people&#8217;s perceptions of the winter of 2012, which was anomalously warm. Comparing Gallup polling results from early March 2012 (just after the winter ended) with actual temperature data\u2026\u201cThe researchers found that \u2018Democrats [were] more likely than Republicans to perceive local winter temperatures as warmer than usual\u201d\u2026beliefs about global warming also predicted temperature perceptions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"color: #222222;\">\n<p>It may have been one of the warmest years on record, but this work shows that partisanship affected who actually\u00a0<i>felt<\/i>\u00a0warmer than usual. We\u2019ve known about socialization for a long time\u2014 many researchers study how social groups teach people to act in certain ways\u2014but this study is especially interesting because it shows how deeply political socialization can effect individuals. Later in the article Dunlap argues that \u201cpeople have begun to filter their fundamental perceptions of what is going on\u2026through a partisan frame.\u201d Contrary to expectations, this also means firsthand experiences with extreme weather as the planet warms may not be enough to inspire widespread change for environmental protection.
