For those of us with pets, it is easy to forget that your furry friend is actually animal, rather than human.<\/p>\n<p>Given our deep attachments to our pets, University of Warwick sociologist <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/soc\/sociology\/staff\/academicstaff\/nickiecharles\/\">Nickie Charles <\/a>encourages fellow social scientists investigating kinship and community to seriously consider humans\u2019 relationships with their pets. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/navigation\/nature-and-technology\/pets-sociological-subjects-73339\/\">Drawing on 249 qualitative responses regarding pets<\/a>, she writes, &#8220;People turn to animals for companionship and intimacy; pets provide the ontological security which is no longer forthcoming from relations with humans, which are fragile, fluid and contingent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the role that pets play in the lives of their owners, examining these human-animal relationships may lead to a deeper understanding of the ways\u00a0humans form relationships with one another.<\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\" async=\"\"><\/script><!-- TSP testing --> <ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 234px; height: 60px;\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4670099812817063\" data-ad-slot=\"1069646635\"><\/ins><script type=\"text\/javascript\">\/\/ < ![CDATA[\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n\/\/ ]]><\/script><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2638\" alt=\"Picture 2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/files\/2014\/03\/Picture-2-330x38.png\" width=\"330\" height=\"38\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You don\u2019t have to carry your pet around with you in a purse for the special animal in your life to be like another member of the family.
