However, one of the basic tenets of Sociology 101 is that nothing happens in isolation&#8212;we must also look at the social sphere <em>around<\/em> an individual.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guyland.net\/\">Michael Kimmel<\/a> reminds us of this maxim in <a href=\"http:\/\/msmagazine.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/24\/the-18437-perpetrators-of-steubenville\/\">a recent opinion piece<\/a> on <em>Ms. Magazine\u2019s<\/em> website. Writing about the community response around a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/12\/17\/sports\/high-school-football-rape-case-unfolds-online-and-divides-steubenville-ohio.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=2&amp;\">now-notorious Steubenville, Ohio gang rape<\/a>, Kimmel argues that public outcry against the individual perpetrators (and trivial \u201cposter boy(s) for teenage male douchery\u201d who make light of the event) misses the point. What about the influence of a male-dominated community that could protect the perpetrators\u2014those Kimmel calls \u201cThe 18,437 Perpetrators of Steubenville\u201d in his title? He writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As I found in my interviews with more than 400 young men for my book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guyland.net\/\"><em>Guyland<\/em><\/a>, in the aftermath of these sorts of events&#8212;when high-status high school athletes commit felonies, especially gang rape&#8212;they are surrounded and protected by their fathers, their school administrations and their communities.<\/p>\n<p>They did what they did because they felt entitled to, because they knew they could get away with it.
