{"id":3389,"date":"2012-07-12T15:37:22","date_gmt":"2012-07-12T20:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/citings\/?p=3389"},"modified":"2012-07-12T15:37:22","modified_gmt":"2012-07-12T20:37:22","slug":"it-still-takes-a-village","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/clippings\/2012\/07\/12\/it-still-takes-a-village\/","title":{"rendered":"It Still Takes a Village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Creative Commons licensed photo by stefernie on flickr.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/64913090@N00\/7515333868\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8428\/7515333868_ecf07b9a38_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Today, people are opting out of parenthood at unprecedented rates.\u00a0 In 1976, 10% of U.S. women ages 40-44 had never had a child; by 2006, the percentage had doubled. \u00a0While some people desire children but are unable to have them, increasing numbers of adults are deciding to form families without children.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/bangordailynews.com\/2012\/07\/10\/opinion\/contributors\/childless-and-loving-it-not-being-a-parent-has-advantages-for-families-and-kids\/\">recent opinion piece<\/a>, Sociologist Amy Blackstone explained that families that don\u2019t include children still can play an important role in the life of children.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0According to the people I\u2019ve interviewed, child-free adults serve as mentors, role models, back-up parents, playmates, fun aunties, big brothers, partners-in-crime, advisers and buddies to the children in their lives. And, as research conducted for Big Brothers Big Sisters shows, having caring adults who are not their parents involved in their lives improves kids\u2019 confidence, grades and social skills.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though stereotypes often portray adults without children as self-involved or baby-haters, Blackstone notes that most child-free adults enjoy children. \u00a0And, at a time when parents are busier than ever, these child-free individuals are often more available, in terms of money or resources, to take on additional responsibilities. \u00a0Apparently, it still takes a village to raise a child.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0Families have changed a lot, but children will always need love and guidance.
