But judging by the site&#8217;s membership, now topping 10 million worldwide, many of <em>you<\/em> are familiar with the social media site. Members have been &#8220;pinning&#8221; their favorite items&#8212;images, videos, messages, etc.&#8212;to themed, virtual pin boards since 2010. Nor am I representative of most sociologists: just check out the contributions from Gwen Sharp and Lisa Wade over at <a title=\"Sociological Images\" href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sociological Images<\/a> or the teaching-centric boards compiled by self-professed public sociologists at <a title=\"The Sociological Cinema\" href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/thesocycinema\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Sociological Cinema<\/a> to see what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond how it&#8217;s already being used,\u00a0<a title=\"Deborah Lupton\" href=\"http:\/\/usyd.academia.edu\/DeborahLupton\" target=\"_blank\">Deborah Lupton<\/a>, a sociologist at the University of Sydney, suggests in <em><a title=\"The Australian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/higher-education\/pinterest-reveals-its-sociology-horizons\/story-e6frgcjx-1226401617660\" target=\"_blank\">The Australian<\/a><\/em>\u00a0that\u00a0Pinterest also offers a creative way to organize research materials. Lupton has created a <a title=\"board\" href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/dalupton\/\">board<\/a> for each of her areas of intellectual inquiry. As Lupton explains, &#8220;Because of its emphasis on the visual; [Pinterest is] perfect for curating and displaying images that are related to the subject matter one is researching or teaching.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So whether you&#8217;re planning your summer travel itinerary, next semester&#8217;s syllabus, or your next research grant&#8212;tap in to the inspiration!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Admittedly, I know little about Pinterest.
