{"id":2739,"date":"2012-01-10T11:15:21","date_gmt":"2012-01-10T16:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/citings\/?p=2739"},"modified":"2012-01-10T11:15:21","modified_gmt":"2012-01-10T16:15:21","slug":"ows-the-course-available-only-at-nyu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/clippings\/2012\/01\/10\/ows-the-course-available-only-at-nyu\/","title":{"rendered":"OWS, the Course: Available only at NYU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2741\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/kapkap\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2741 \" title=\"Occupy Wall Street\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/citings\/files\/2012\/01\/Occupy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by _PaulS_ via flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Columbia University was going to offer a course on Occupy Wall Street this spring, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/p\/news\/local\/manhattan\/columbia_offers_occupy_PKetTw1QSVVk23BllNN0DL\"><em>New York Post<\/em><\/a> and others reported last week&#8212;but it looks like that announcement was premature.<\/p>\n<p>The anthropology class at Columbia was to be called &#8220;Occupy the Field: Global Finance, Inequality, Social Movement.&#8221; However, administrators said the course didn&#8217;t go through the necessary faculty approval process in order to be offered this spring, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/bwog.com\/2012\/01\/05\/anthro-ows-class-may-be-history\/\">Bwog<\/a>, the blog of Columbia University\u2019s monthly undergraduate magazine, <em>The Blue and White.<\/em> Hence, the course is no longer listed among the department&#8217;s offerings for the semester starting Jan. 17.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Students at NYU, though, <em>will<\/em> be able to get credit for studying the movement in an undergraduate course in the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis, taught by <a href=\"http:\/\/sca.as.nyu.edu\/object\/LisaDuggan\">Professor Lis<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/sca.as.nyu.edu\/object\/LisaDuggan\">a Duggan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Occupy Wall Street has done us all the service of illuminating [the fact] that the economy operates within the framework of political, social and cultural conflicts, and not outside them,&#8221; Duggan told <a href=\"http:\/\/nyunews.com\/news\/2011\/12\/08\/08ows\/\"><em>Washington Square News<\/em><\/a>, NYU&#8217;s daily student newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The university will also offer a graduate course on OWS with Professor of Sociology <a href=\"http:\/\/as.nyu.edu\/object\/jeffgoodwin.html\">Jeff Goodwin<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Columbia University was going to offer a course on Occupy Wall Street this spring, the New York Post and others reported last week&#8212;but it looks like that announcement was premature.
