{"id":154,"date":"2008-07-02T13:46:45","date_gmt":"2008-07-02T19:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/crawler\/?p=154"},"modified":"2008-07-02T13:46:45","modified_gmt":"2008-07-02T19:46:45","slug":"sociologist-comments-on-guantanamo-interrogations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/clippings\/2008\/07\/02\/sociologist-comments-on-guantanamo-interrogations\/","title":{"rendered":"sociologist comments on guantanamo interrogations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/crawler\/files\/2008\/07\/430678432_fd69968c42_m.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-155\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/crawler\/files\/2008\/07\/430678432_fd69968c42_m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a>UK paper, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/northamerica\/usa\/2236257\/Guantanamo-Bay-interrogations-based-on-faulty-Chinese-communist-methods.html\">Telegraph<\/a> reports on a recent study from sociologist Alfred Biderman, titled <em>&#8216;Communist Attempts to Elicit    False Confessions From Air Force Prisoners of War.&#8217; <\/em>This studied garnered media attention today as it was revealed that US interrogators&#8217; training was based on Chinese methods of interrogation proven to be ineffective.<\/p>\n<p>Telegraph reporter Tim Shipman writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>American military trainers gave a class to camp interrogators in 2002 on how    to use &#8220;sleep deprivation&#8221;, &#8220;exposure&#8221; and other &#8220;torture&#8221;    methods to reduce captives to &#8220;animals&#8221; and obtain information.<\/p>\n<p>But it has emerged that the techniques presented in the class were copied    word-for-word from a 1957 US Air Force study which focused on Chinese    techniques \u2013 that did not work.<\/p>\n<p>The study by sociologist Alfred Biderman, <em>Communist Attempts to Elicit    False Confessions From Air Force Prisoners of War<\/em> commented on methods    that led to false confessions and &#8220;brainwashing.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mr Biderman&#8217;s article described &#8220;one form of torture&#8221; used by the    Chinese as forcing prisoners to stand &#8220;for exceedingly long periods&#8221;    in conditions of &#8220;extreme cold&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It also detailed how &#8220;semi-starvation&#8221;, the &#8220;exploitation of    wounds&#8221; and &#8220;filthy, infested surroundings&#8221; could reduce a    prisoner to &#8220;animal level concerns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Guantanamo Bay interrogation of Mohammed al-Qahtani, suspected of being    the intended 20th hijacker during the September 11 attacks, is known to have    included sleep deprivation and exposure to cold.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/northamerica\/usa\/2236257\/Guantanamo-Bay-interrogations-based-on-faulty-Chinese-communist-methods.html#continue\">Read more.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK paper, the Telegraph reports on a recent study from sociologist Alfred Biderman, titled &#8216;Communist Attempts to Elicit False Confessions From Air Force Prisoners of War.&#8217; This studied garnered media attention today as it was revealed that US interrogators&#8217; training was based on Chinese methods of interrogation proven to be ineffective.
