You can download this essay as part of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/2013_Symposium_Equal-Pay.pdf\"><em>CCF\u2019s Equal Pay Symposium<\/em><\/a><em>(.pdf).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Gender inequality within families is reciprocally related to gender inequality in the paid workplace. <\/em>That is why one of the legacies of the Equal Pay Act, which brought scrutiny and sanctions to bear on gender discrimination at work, has been growing egalitarianism within families as well. Research consistently shows the effect of workplace progress on equality within couples. Most recently, <a href=\"http:\/\/jfi.sagepub.com\/content\/32\/11\/1449.short\">analysis of the American Time-Use Survey<\/a> confirms that women\u2019s own earnings are associated with the amount of housework they perform. Women earned less than 10 percent of <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2012\/12\/11\/more-women-are-doctors-and-lawyers-than-ever-but-progress-is-stalling\/\">degrees in law and medicine<\/a>, and full-time employed women earned just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iwpr.org\/initiatives\/the-wage-gap-and-occupational-segregation\">59 percent of what men<\/a> made. Not surprisingly, at that time just 7 percent of wives ages 25-54 <a href=\"http:\/\/familyinequality.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/10\/end-of-men-richer-sex-reality-check-40-years-of-pants-edition\/\">earned more than their husbands<\/a> \u2013 and wives did almost <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/41683183\">six-times as much housework as husbands<\/a>. <em>Their constrained workplace opportunity weakened their relative standing at home.<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today women hold about 40 percent of managerial jobs, receive almost half of law and medicine degrees (and the majority of BAs), and earn more than 75 percent of men\u2019s earnings. Wives outearn their husbands in 28 percent of couples \u2013 a historic high. These gains have led to an impressive reduction in the disparity between husbands; and wives\u2019 housework. Today wives only do 1.7-times as much housework as their husbands. <em>Inequality at home and the workplace remain formidable, but labor market progress has made possible large steps toward parity within families.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><div class=\"pull-this-show\" id=\"pull-this-show-75-ex1\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/div>Most of this progress, however, took place in the 1970s and 1980s. <\/em>The stall in both arenas since then is unequivocal, as I describe in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bulawreview\/files\/2013\/08\/COHEN.pdf\"><em>Boston University Law Review<\/em> article.<\/a> As progress toward equal labor force participation and access to occupations and equal pay slowed, the division of labor within families got stuck as well. However, the paid workplace is more amenable to policy intervention, while families tend to be more tradition-bound. <em>Unsticking progress toward gender equality in the labor market \u2013 extending the legacy of the Equal Pay Act \u2013 will help move families forward toward more egalitarian relationships.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class='author-bios author-bios-bottom'>\n<p><span class='bio-author-name'>Philip N.
