{"id":386,"date":"2015-02-05T09:00:41","date_gmt":"2015-02-05T09:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/ccf\/?p=386"},"modified":"2016-02-23T11:55:14","modified_gmt":"2016-02-23T17:55:14","slug":"gender-pay-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/ccf\/2015\/02\/05\/gender-pay-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gender Pay Gap by Race and Ethnicity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On average, white women earn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/files\/2013\/02\/The-Simple-Truth-2013.pdf\">81 percent<\/a> of what white men make. <strong>At first glance it may appear that there is <\/strong><strong>more gender equality among minority men and women than among whites.<\/strong> Hispanic or Latina women make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/files\/2013\/02\/The-Simple-Truth-2013.pdf\">88 percent<\/a> of what Latinos do and African American women make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/files\/2013\/02\/The-Simple-Truth-2013.pdf\">90 percent<\/a> of what their male counterparts make.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But when we add race to gender, these pay gaps become a veritable chasm.<\/strong> African American women earn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/files\/2013\/02\/The-Simple-Truth-2013.pdf\">36 percent<\/a> less than white men and Latinas a mere <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/files\/2013\/02\/The-Simple-Truth-2013.pdf\">45 percent<\/a>. Interestingly, the gap between the earnings of Asian women and white men is smaller, just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/files\/2013\/02\/The-Simple-Truth-2013.pdf\">12 percent<\/a>, but that mounts up over a lifetime, and Asian American women earn just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aauw.org\/files\/2013\/02\/The-Simple-Truth-2013.pdf\">73 percent<\/a> of what Asian American men make.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_388\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-388\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a title=\"Image by 401kcalculator.org via Flickr CC\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/68751915@N05\/6757875045\/in\/gallery-108712244@N05-72157637684189836\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-388 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/ccf\/files\/2015\/02\/6757875045_7c12b122e1_o-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Image by 401kcalculator.org via Flickr CC\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/ccf\/files\/2015\/02\/6757875045_7c12b122e1_o-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/ccf\/files\/2015\/02\/6757875045_7c12b122e1_o-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-388\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image by 401kcalculator.org via Flickr CC<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Men lost jobs especially rapidly during the first phases of the Great Recession, but the ripple effects have led to lays offs of hundreds of thousands of state and local government workers, about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/bp339-public-sector-jobs-crisis\/\">70 percent<\/a> of whom were women and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/bp339-public-sector-jobs-crisis\/\">20 percent<\/a> of whom were African Americans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And things are not likely to get better for women as the economy continues to pick up speed.<\/strong> While the majority of jobs lost in the recession were mid-range jobs, the majority of new jobs that have been created in the recovery are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nelp.org\/page\/-\/Job_Creation\/LowWageRecovery2012.pdf?nocdn=1\">low-wage<\/a>. Many of the occupations with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/labor\/news\/2013\/04\/09\/59682\/growing-occupations-could-help-decrease-the-wage-gap-if-they-were-to-pay-a-living-wage\/\">largest<\/a> projected job growth are minority and female-dominated, but they are jobs such as home health aides and personal care aides, with earnings of only about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/labor\/news\/2013\/04\/09\/59682\/growing-occupations-could-help-decrease-the-wage-gap-if-they-were-to-pay-a-living-wage\/\">20,000 dollars<\/a> per year.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"pull-this-show\" id=\"pull-this-show-386-ex1\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/div> <strong>Today, in spite of <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/fastfacts\/display.asp?id=72\"><strong>increasing educational gains<\/strong><\/a><strong>, women of color are especially likely to work in minimum-wage jobs, where even a full-time, year-round worker will earn just <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwlc.org\/resource\/fair-pay-women-requires-increasing-minimum-wage-and-tipped-minimum-wage\"><strong>14,500<\/strong><\/a><strong> dollars a year, scarcely enough to keep one person \u2013 let alone a family \u2013 afloat.<\/strong> In 2011, nearly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/cps\/minwage2011tbls.htm\">360,000<\/a> black and Latina women were paid hourly rates that were less than the minimum wage. Since Social Security benefits are based upon an individual\u2019s lifetime earnings, these low wages <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/labor\/report\/2013\/04\/09\/59731\/how-pay-inequity-hurts-women-of-color\/\">hurt women<\/a> well into retirement, leaving many elderly women in poverty or on the brink. <span class=\"pull-this-mark\" id=\"pull-this-mark-386-ex1\" style=\"display:none;\">Things are not likely to get better for women as the economy continues to pick up.
