This week, we are thinking about attention to what is said and done, and preparing for Women&#8217;s Equality Day on August 26.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">Sex gets used a lot of ways\u2013and a number of them are not about shared pleasure and connection. I have written about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2011\/OPINION\/06\/15\/rutter.weiner.boys\/\">political sex scandals<\/a>\u00a0and the way generations of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/articles\/199501\/whose-hell-is-it\">youth get shamed<\/a> about their sexual norms. Though it may be facile, I find myself noting \u201cthe more things change, the more they remain the same\u201d \u2014 the issues change a little bit but the use of sex as a tool of power and control, not so much.<\/div>\n<p>This is sex as political football. Sometimes the games have the veneer of lightness, like a game you play after Thanksgiving dinner. Today, though, I was writing about the use of rape as tool of war.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996 the International War Crimes Tribunal focused on rape\u00a0 in the Bosnian war, and prosecuted people involved. Discussion of one of those prosecutions was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1997\/03\/03\/arts\/women-as-victims-of-the-bosnian-war.html\">here<\/a>, and this quotation gripped me:<\/p>\n<p><em>In a reply to his accusers, Mr. Mejakic, who along with others under indictment remains safely in Serb territory, described Ms. Cigelj as being old and unattractive; he added that he wouldn\u2019t have leaned his bicycle against her, much less raped her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then I looked at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2016\/10\/13\/politics\/natasha-stoynoff-donald-trump-women\/\">this<\/a>, from 20 years later, last month (October 2016):<\/p>\n<p><em>Donald Trump on Thursday adamantly denied claims he forced himself on a People Magazine journalist more than a decade ago, responding to her accusation of sexual assault by saying, \u201cLook at her \u2026 I don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s today\u2019s brief reflection on normalization, 1996-2016.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Posted originally on November 18, 2016, at\u00a0Girl w\/ Pen.
