Here are the five most talked about pieces\u2014as measured by media impact:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kristi Williams\u2019 January report, <a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/marriage-ineffective-in-war-on-poverty-report\/\"><strong>&#8220;Promoting marriage among single mothers: An ineffective weapon in the war on poverty?<\/strong>&#8220;<\/a>, explains that giving women the education and resources to prevent unintended pregnancies may be the best approach to alleviating poverty. The report was part of the online symposium, <a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/war-on-poverty-release\/\">&#8220;50th Anniversary of the War on Poverty: Have we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory?,&#8221;<\/a> and it was covered by other media more than 15 times&#8211;including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/09\/magazine\/can-marriage-cure-poverty.html?_r=1\">The New York Times<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/01\/07\/single-moms-marriage_n_4557202.html\">The Huffington Post<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/healthland.time.com\/2014\/01\/06\/are-single-moms-better-off-single\/\">Time<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Arielle Kuperberg asked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contemporaryfamilies.org\/cohabitation-divorce-brief-report\/\"><strong>&#8220;Does Premarital Cohabitation Raise Your Risk of Divorce?&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> in a March report: the answer was \u201cno.\u201d Kuperberg found that it is the lower ages and maturity levels of individuals in a couple who move in together that puts both cohabiting and married couples at risk for splitting up. The report was covered by at least 37 media sources, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2014\/03\/the-science-of-cohabitation-a-step-toward-marriage-not-a-rebellion\/284512\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shape.com\/blogs\/shape-your-life\/shacking-marriage-wont-doom-your-relationship-after-all\">Shape,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/43978-cohabitation-doesnt-cause-divorce.html\">Live Science,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glamour.com\/sex-love-life\/blogs\/smitten\/2014\/03\/best-age-to-live-with-a-guy-fo.html\">Glamour,<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/2014\/03\/10\/cohabitation-doesnt-cause-divorce-after-all\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+foxnews%2Fhealth+%28Internal+-+Health+-+Text%29\">Fox News<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/debunked-cohabitating-couples-not-more-likely-divorce-2D79359875\">The Today Show<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/03\/11\/divorce-cohabitation-stud_n_4936928.html\">The Huffington Post<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/20386\/how-shacking-up-before-marriage-affects-a-relationships-success\/\">Time<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/cohabitation-science-ready-move-together-114728600.html\">Yahoo News<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Damaske\u2019s May report, <a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/work-lowers-stress-levels\/\">&#8220;<strong>Really? Work Lowers People&#8217;s Stress Levels<\/strong>,&#8221;<\/a> suggests how family-friendly work policies may reduce work-family conflict without forcing men and women to choose between the two. Using biomarkers, Damaske observed that people tend to be less stressed at work and that opting out of work has negative long-term consequences for mental and physical health. Damaske\u2019s report was cited by 35 media outlets including <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/108024\/why-more-stress-home-work\/\">Time<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-cycle\/watch\/is-work-more-relaxing-than-being-at-home-264483907738\">MSNBC<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.today.com\/money\/work-life-balance-stressing-us-out-home-2D79695848\">Today<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/work-creates-less-stress-than-home-penn-state-researchers-find-1401749697?KEYWORDS=damaske\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/05\/22\/314898665\/think-work-is-stressful-for-many-it-s-more-relaxing-than-home\">National Public Radio<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/well.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/22\/is-work-your-happy-place\/?_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;_php=true&amp;_type=blogs&amp;hpw&amp;rref=health&amp;_r=1&amp;\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Sharon Sassler\u2019s July <a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/gender-revolution-rebound-glass-half-empty\/\"><strong>&#8220;Is the Glass Half Empty, or Three-Quarters Full?<\/strong>&#8220;<\/a> found that couples who split housework equally have sex at least as often\u2014and with as much satisfaction\u2014as those who stick to traditional divisions of household labor. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/07\/30\/marriage-chores-sex_n_5634992.html\">Huffington Post<\/a> coverage of Sassler\u2019s report was liked 47,000 times on Facebook, and her report was cited at least 14 times by other media outlets including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/47100-egaitarian-couples-have-good-sex.html\">Live Science<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2014\/07\/30\/sex_and_housework_study_sharing_chores_doesn_t_make_couples_have_less_sex.html\">Slate<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phillymag.com\/philadelphia-wedding\/2014\/08\/01\/study-shows-splitting-household-chores-leads-better-married-sex\/\">Philadelphia Magazine<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/07\/31\/your_turn_to_sweep_dude_couples_who_split_chores_do_have_great_sex\/\">Salon<\/a>, and internationally by <a href=\"https:\/\/in.news.yahoo.com\/share-domestic-chores-super-sex-life-061619685.html\">Yahoo News India<\/a>. The symposium from which Sassler\u2019s report came, <a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/gender-revolution-rebound-press-release\/\">&#8220;After a Puzzling Pause, the Gender Revolution Continues,&#8221;<\/a> received twelve more media citations.<\/li>\n<li>Philip Cohen\u2019s September briefing report, <a href=\"https:\/\/contemporaryfamilies.org\/the-new-normal\/\">&#8220;<strong>Family Diversity is the New Normal for America&#8217;s Children<\/strong>,&#8221;<\/a> details family diversity today, leading to the conclusion that there is no single \u201cnormal\u201d family structure. Though long and persistently imagined as the norm, the traditional male-breadwinner family arrangement now comprises only 22 percent of children\u2019s families. Cohen\u2019s report reminded readers that policy must change accordingly. Cohen\u2019s brief was cited by more than 30 media sources, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/local\/wp\/2014\/09\/04\/for-the-first-time-since-the-1950s-there-is-no-typical-u-s-family\/\">The Washington Post<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/blogs\/data-mine\/2014\/09\/04\/no-such-thing-as-a-typical-family-setup-study-finds\">U.S. News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pyZoNs0kAkA\">Fox &amp; Friends<\/a>, The <a href=\"http:\/\/ncronline.org\/news\/faith-parish\/divorce-migration-changing-face-families-worldwide\">National Catholic Reporter<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.livescience.com\/47681-normal-american-family-a-myth.html\">Live Science<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/21\/opinion\/sunday\/sad-dads-in-the-empty-nest.html?_r=1\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to these widely covered pieces, over the course of 2014, at least 27 CCF experts provided media with updated perspectives on research through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/sex-love\/news\/a32069\/bigger-salary-better-sex\/\">interviews<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3054909\/gender-pay-gap-working-mothers\/\">news articles<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/10\/30\/opinion\/davis-risman-halloween-princess\/index.html?iref=allsearch\">opinion pieces<\/a>, on topics ranging from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/10\/13\/opinion\/coontz-same-sex-marriage\/index.html\">politics<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/08\/26\/opinion\/schwartz-miley-cyrus\/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn\">pop culture<\/a>. In working toward CCF\u2019s mission to increase public knowledge about family diversity and change, these combined efforts led to more than 250 media citations. This makes a difference!
