I'm instantly suspicious of any discussion of mental illness that presumes it has a circumstantial cause. We might get very similar results if we replaced "depression" with "schizophrenia," considering the impact the symptoms of the latter can have on one's educational prospects, but we certainly wouldn't say that schizophrenia is caused by low educational attainments.

And even if we can attribute a certain amount of depression symptoms to life circumstances, how do we detach educational attainment from career attainment, considering the well-known correlation between level of degree and average income?

Please educate us about how educational attainment was determined to be the cause of depression after other proximal correlates of educational attainment were considered and ruled out.

I'm wondering if 99% of the world was depressed prior to the twentieth century.
