Yeah, I don’t really see the difference you’re saying there is between national news and local news. In the case of violent flash mobs, for example, local news will suppress information about the race of all-black crimes in an apparent attempt to not appear racist, while the national media has for the most part been completely silent about what are literally hundreds of incidents of this style of crime for which there simply are next to no comparable examples of whites doing.

So you’re point is about the ACTUAL news report and not the satirized version that Cord is presenting? Well that’s just another facet (not a flaw) to Cord’s satire. Many times local news will show a much more varied scene of an “incident”, while the cable news shows will distill down to (many times) stereotyped tropes. So no I don’t see your point in how what Cord and company was doing, doesn’t work to show the rather racist way much of mainstream media (and Black activist) frames “Black crime” versus “non-Black” crime.

You misread my comment. Go look at the Facebook link to HBPD I posted. Around half of the people pictured there aren’t white.

The point of Cord’s script flipping is to show how we look at “white riots” differently from “black riots,” or in a more general sense how we view black criminality different from white criminality. This may or may not be true, but the comparison really only works if he were to show an example of all-white criminality. This surf competition riot in Huntington Beach wasn’t an example of that, as much as Cord might wish it was. At best, this riot would work in a comparison of how we perceive mixed race criminality vs. black criminality differently.

I think you have a misconception about the meaning of “half.” Go back, take screen shots, and see the true ratio of color in the video. Also, the video is meant to point out the ridiculousness of profiling/steretyping–part of that is recognizing that there are overgeneralizations that are made.

Actually, I’ve seen the exact opposite – crime reports where the race “black” is never mentioned and euphemisms such as “teen” or “youths” are used instead. The whole “violent flash mob” phenomenon is a prime example of this odd journalistic house style.

The “script flipping” attempted here by Cord Jefferson doesn’t really work. When the Huntington Beach PD posted stills of wanted rioters, at least half were non-whites. It seems like even in a “white riot” non-whites are over-represented. Oh well, amusing idea even if it’s not borne out by reality in this case.

I totally love these, thank you so much! One thing though, in that video of the mob — there are no women. Well only one and she’s quickly grabbed by (her boyfriend presumably) and rushed through the mob to safety. And when there are no women who feel safe participating, you know there’s a problem…

I bet there were a lot of gang rapes at that event.
