Great analysis! It’s interesting to see how all of these numbers break down across the different ages, races, and genders. I agree that some of the death groupings are interesting (murder might include self defense, police shootings grouped with accidents, etc.) but I think that it makes sense for the points that the graphs seem to be trying to make.

So they are misrepresenting facts to suit their agenda. 19 year olds are rarely considered children in any other context.

I think on that page they’re defining children as 19 and under, which would probably make a significant difference. Looking at that site’s 15 and under numbers, it seems to come a lot closer. I don’t have any statistics on hand, but it would seem to me that a lot more of these shootings occur among kids in the 17-19 range.

Sorry, yes, table 6. I was fishing through my browsing history and grabbed the wrong one. It does list offenders by race, but not the offender/victim link.

You are right, 1/7th and 1/14th are more accurate. I did a quick estimate on the ratios to get the gist of the dataset. I don’t think that the difference significantly changes the interpretation – that black on white homicide occurs at roughly twice the rate of white on black homicide, but that both are a relatively small percentage of homicides overall.

Your link does not describe offender/victim data, but rather looks at age of victim. Can you please provide the link you’re using? Table 6 of the same set of DoJ data looks like relevant, but the rates in that table (roughly 1/7th and 1/14th, respectively) do not match your comments.

I’d say murder gets more attention than suicide because the usual thing is for the media not to report on suicides on the idea that this would encourage more suicides.

Suicides are reported when it is a notable individual or when the event forced news reporting, such as a suicide causing a traffic jam. Perhaps another situation would be a report on suicide in general, but this would be punctual.This might not be the case in every news company but it is a widespread principle.

More has to do with total numbers. Men commit and are the victims of roughly 10x the number of murders as women.

The vast majority of violence is black on black or white on white.

Black on white violence accounts for roughly 1/10th of the total white victims. White on black for 1/5th of the total black victims. Most victims knew their killer, which probably accounts for some of that given the segregation of social circles.
