I breastfeed my son until he was 2 and a half. Since he was three months old I worked full time at my banking job. When he was a little less then six months old I also went back to nursing school full time. I was able to accomplish this with little support from my significant other. I have several other friends that work full time as RN and they too solely breastfeed. So it is possible to breastfeed past six to eight months. With this being said I do not believe women should be pushed to believe breastfeeding is the only acceptable way to feed a baby.

I still think this mom has issues. Is she nursing for him or herself? You have to stop and r eally ask this question. Could she realistically pump and put the milk in a sippy cup for the kid to take to daycare? Because he really needs to grow a sense of self and realize that nutrition and comfort ranges beyond mom's boob. Lord knows my son would be scrutinized if he was on the bottle at this age (nevermind if said bottle contained breast milk)

Breastfeeding as a working mother in the US IS hard -- you are correct to make that statement. Many working mothers who have an interest/desire in breastfeeding are unable to because either they themselves don't know their rights in that realm (which vary from state to state), or they are bullied by uneducated or unsupportive management. That being said, it is possible to work full-time and breastfeed. I went back to work when my daughter was 4 weeks old and am still nursing her at 1.5 years of age. I did, however, have a supervisor who didn't give me grief and was aware of my rights in terms of having access to time to pump, etc.

Additionally, calling all Westerns Europeans privileged isn't exactly a fair statement since their taxes pay for those programs and are doled out to their citizens fairly equitably (depending on country). I hope the day comes in the US that we also make parental leave a priority and catch up to the rest of the "modern" (and in some cases not-as-modern) world. Feasible family/work balance, in my humble opinion, should be a right, not a privilege.

So, because you haven't heard of any study, they don't exist? Or, perhaps, because of your socialization YOU don't see any children of that age needing breastmilk, so therefore, there can be no need? How very nice and egocentric of you. Perhaps I should consult you before I engage in any activity whatsoever, since you are obviously of supreme intellect to know the exact needs of everyone, everywhere. Thank you so much for exposing your true intellect for us all to bask in the glory. One question though, is your position of supreme overloard an elected position, or is it appointed?

Sorry but where I say that American are privileged? actually I don't think they are, especially when one speak of maternity leave and the like. Secondly, I do not live in western Europe but in eastern Europe. I did get paid maternity leave, but we are paid peanuts. Moreover, it's true that I work part time but I have a few friends that work full time (and overtime) and still they were able to brestfeed until their children were about 3 years old because, as I tried to tell you a few times but you don't seem to think it's relevant, their children (as mine) wanted to breastfeed just once or twice a day, mostly in the evening. >>> I'm home with my child in the morning and I do not breasfead him then, I feed him normal lunch.

Are you literally insane, or just willfully obtuse? BTW, I never ate bananas as a child, and no one started a league of people pounding down my mother's door because I was denied bananas, and no one started putting pictures of themselves shoving bananas down their children's throats to prove a point. 4 year old children do not need bananas OR breastmilk specifically, they need a balanced diet of enough food.

You made two qualifications as to why your comment is completely irrelevant to my point: you work PART TIME, first. You, by virtue of being able to work part time, are inherently more privileged than most mothers. Second, you are European. I know that the trendy idea is "Americans are so privileged, so rich, so spoiled," and it's such an arrogant, ignorant attitude coming from Europeans. I have been to Europe. Western Europeans are drenched in privileges that most Americans will never see. I don't know any women who weren't wealthy who had the option to take extended (more than a few months, and not usually paid) of maternity leave, and almost no women I know had the option to work part time instead of full time, much less take paid time off or just stay home. I don't know any women who were not wealthy who breastfed past 6-8 months because in the US, we don't live in a utopia full of paid maternity leave, great health care, and social support for such things.

What Tat said, exactly. My breasts are part of my body and I get to do what I want with them. Full stop. I don't care if there is research that shows that the benefits of breastfeeding wane after the child turns X age, if nursing is part of my relationship with my kid, that is my decision. Or, if it is never part of my relationship with my kid, that is also my decision. It is very tiresome that everyone wants to sexualize or demonize women for making their choices with their body and their child. If I read some of these comments too closely I would think we were looking for a statistically accurate study to tell us the *exact* length of time we should breastfeed: 6.72 months, and then the benefits drop off and breasts should return to being sexual again. Drama!
