not only that, but the poorest non-resident parents tend to just not pay child support, and go deeper and deeper into debt - but it doesn't count as an expense, so it is less likely to push someone into poverty

I don't disagree with that at all. I guess I just think it is interesting how gender plays itself out in the data without being officially present.

I'm pretty sure I've heard that women tend to come out financially worse out of divorce (despite the meme that divorce involves taking all the man's money and giving it to the woman). Plus, being a custodial parent would leave you with less time and energy to work overtime/multiple jobs, and give you a bigger household to care for.

What I find interesting is that the child support (paid) amount seems to have less of a negative effect--in terms of personal finance-- than child support (received) has in the other direction. From personal experience, I can see where that could be the case, but it is interesting to see depicted in data. Not sure exactly what to make of it, since the person who is generally on the paying end is a father while a mother may be more likely to be receiving. I would like to see how much the data fluctuates depending on if the receiving person had one, two, or more children to care for versus the person paying only having to be responsible for themselves and this theoretical 1+ children.
