I take it you are referring not to science done in Marxist states, but something else?

I thought that he had written that it was an accident due in part to a kind of sexual practice that they engaged in and which is not uncommon. He accidentally strangled her, I believe. But I could be wrong.
It did knock him off his pedestal as THE Marxist intellectual who was defending Marxist science against Hegelian Marxism and other revisionist Marxisms.
But every thinker has to be read and interpreted in terms of what she or he actually writes (and says publicly, e.g. in interviews). If we were to choose our thinkers on the basis of morality and ethics alone we would definitely have to eliminate Martin Heidegger. Heidegger was an out and out Nazi. Indeed, he critiqued the fascists for not being fascist enough. Yet Heidegger is still considered an important contributor.

To be fair, Althusser claims his wife asked him to euthanize her because she was having significant medical problems. Though it’s kind of his word against hers, and she can’t really provide much of a rebuttal anymore.
