While poor black people have equivalent life expectancies as poor white people. The big point that is wooshing over your head is POOR. What this graph doesn't tell us is what percentage of each group is poor.
Bullshit. These graphs only show that poor people who are unable to access healthcare have similar life expectancies. Life expectancies for poor black people has scarcely improved at all. The fact that there is a class intersection here does not obviate white privilege.

Indeed.. is an increased concentration of disadvantages reducing the life expectancy for the group, or is the group itself changing to include only those who have the worst combination of disadvantages, and shedding itself of those who have the ability to end up in a better, longer life?

Is the population changing or the sampling?

Well, we know that strong disparities in life expectancy usually have a racial justice component.

usually.

And I note its tagged gender, work, family, health and intersectionality. You mentioned 'white' but didn't tag it 'race'?

It would be interesting to see what the relative distributions are around those numbers. How large, for example, is 1 S.D. from these mean values, and how is the level of variation changing?

In addition, I think that it would be interested to know the geographic distribution of these data. Even if it were urban/rural, state-by-state, or by region (e.g., South, Midwest, Northeast, West). This could help provide some explanation to the marked trends we see.

Unfortunately, nothing in the NYTimes article seem to shed any light as to the variation, the change in variation, or the geographic distribution of death rates.
