The movie theaters probably don't it like it because people probably are reluctant to get up and buy another drink during the movie since they will miss part of it. As for restaurants it just adds to the cost of doing business if you have a bunch of silly and unnecessary regulation about your cup sizes that you have to adhere to.

Just because we have silly laws already is not a good argument for adding more.

people can decide a lot of things for themselves, like how much lead they're comfortable with in their paint, and whether they want to wear seatbelts. but there are still laws about those things. "that is just a myth" isn't actually an argument.

if people are just going to buy more sodas, why is it the restaurants and movie theaters who seem to care so much and people who are kind of like, whatever, i can just get a liter bottle at the grocery store? wouldn't this be a good thing for those businesses?

That is just a myth. Have you ever know people to be shy about getting seconds or going back for free refills? I haven't. This myth mostly serves to shift the responsibility from the individual to an evil corporation. "I am not fat because because I am lazy and lack motivation, no, I'm fat because evil corporations are using Jedi mind tricks to make me fat."

Why do we do any laws about it? People can decide for themselves how much soda they want to drink, it's not the governments job.

i'm still waiting for the an explanation of how fat and muscle affect your ability to deal with sugars, and specifically affect your insulin levels.

also, not dealing with sugar is not always diabetes. diabetes is a specific disease and it's an insulin issue, and how your body deals with insulin affects how your body can deal with sugar.

you can have a 'sugar problem' that isn't diabetes, but type 2 diabetes is not genetic, and type 1 diabetes isn't what anyone talks about when they are shaming fat people for their weight.

can you provide links to the research you're talking about?

probably not. from the omnivore's dilemma:

"As the story is told in John Love’s official history of McDonald’s, Wallerstein tried everything he could think of to goose up sales — two-for-one deals, matinee specials — but found he simply could not induce customers to buy more than one soda and one bag of popcorn. He thought he knew why: Going for seconds makes people feel piggish.
Wallerstein discovered that people would spring for more popcorn and soda — a lot more — as long as it came in a single gigantic serving. Thus was born the two-quart bucket of popcorn, the sixty-four-ounce Big Gulp, and, in time, the Big Mac and the jumbo fries..."so basically, people don't want to go back for seconds. maybe that's changed now that people have gotten used to big portions, but since the only real opposition i've seen to the ban has been in movie theaters, i'm willing to bet they don't think people will be buying 2 medium drinks either.

personally, i think the law should just stipulate that smaller portions be available.

Fat reduces your body's ability to deal with sugars, while muscle increases it. As I said, how much is too much fat for someone's body is determined by their genetics; in other words, one person could fine with, say 40% of their body weight being fat, while another person could become diabetic because of that.

There's also the caveat that most people with a good diet and some exercise will not reach that point, but for others, that won't be enough. Eating well and exercising do not guarantee that a person will have a small amount of body fat (I know plenty of "overweight" people who do both), and depending on the person's individual DNA, that extra weight may or may not increase their chances of becoming diabetic. No one even knows all of the factors that create diabetes, but studies have consistently shown that the single best way to avoid it is to reach or maintain a small amount of body fat.

As an aside, ever notice how 'weight management' in popular media pretty much always refers to getting/keeping one's weight down? There's diddly about healthy ways to gain weight. I know it's not a common concern, but it really underscores the whole 'healthy and beautiful = thin' mindset of our culture. (As well as being really alienating for someone who is trying to navigate weight issues from the other side of things)

I agree that at least 50+ is a decent milestone, but still: brides and losing pregnancy weight belongs in Beauty and fashion. Even in countries whith failry equal chances to education, there are large numbers that don't go to college. A better way of doing it could be Young adult - Middle age- Family- 50+ - maybe something above 50, since there's a huge difference between 50 and 80 or 90.

Even that the life stages are gendered is interesting. Delving deeper, both New mom and Bride to be seem to be explicitly referring to beauty, the classical "look thin for your wedding" and pregnancy weight aspirations, while 50+ might traditionally be more health oriented. I can't really place the student section, would that be beauty too, or is it mord of healthy diets?
