I was glad to see the post on the intersections of religion and race and disappointed that they didn't include their own results from their Asian American Survey they reported in July. I think if we add in the Asian American religious diversity in the mix we'd see that the Democrats are quite religiously diverse due to the much stronger presence of Asian Americans there.

The etymology of "Hispanic" comes from the geographical association with Hispania, Spain. I would argue that the association with the Spanish language is originally secondary to the wider association with all Spanish culture. Its promotion in the United States as a general term for Spanish-speaking peoples or the peoples of Latin America (I've never heard a Spaniard call themselves Hispanic) is a product of governmental racial classification. Both non-Hispanic identification and Hispanic self-identification as "Hispanic" could definitely be considered racial in nature. I would argue against it as an "ethnic" term in that it's such a broad term versus, say, Ladino, Afro-Peruvian, Nahua, etc., although one could debate the nature of the term "ethnic" as well. I personally don't like any labels like these, especially a term like Hispanic, because of its imposition and negation of indigenous culture (both through association with broader white, Spanish "culture" and the more particular Spanish language.)

Interesting, Hispanic is not a racial group, but an ethnic group. And as usual, you can make statistic say anything you want.....how about doing a pro life chart and a "pro choice" chart? Bunch of bilge!
