Hopelessshade asked us to commemorate the birthday of Laura Mulvey.

The Film and Media Studies professor is famous for introducing us to the idea of the male gaze.   You can read her original essay, published in 1975, in full text here.  The phrase refers to the way in which many films, commercials, and other media products assume an implicitly male, heterosexual viewer.  The content, then, seeks first-and-foremost to please him.

Have a scholar we should commemorate? Send us a wacky pic and we will!
