There is an interesting question of philosophy that comes out of that last point - are we abdicating responsibility for those common concerns to government, or simply paying someone to do full time actions which remain the responsibility of the entire citizenry?

There were taxes in 1900; disposable income has increased since then. You have more money now, after taxes, then before.

The real flaw, now that I see the issue again, is that we have already taken action to provide for disaster relief. One of the points of government is to take a common concern (road maintenance, planning for and executing disaster recovery) and make it the responsibility of a specific individual to maintain that concern.

Actually, it's not "hard to understand what Rep. Paul means by his call for more control by the States" if you have ever taken a US History or US Political science class.

What Ron Paul has a hard on for is the Articles of Confederation. And before you go "RAH RAH RAH THE SOUTH IS RACIST" that has nothing to do with the Civil War.

Right now their are precedents of how governments. Federal -> State -> Local. Ron Paul would like it to be State -> Local -> Federal, with the Fed being at the bottom of the totem pole. Pretty common thought process for American Libertarians.

But glad that you wasted what I assume an entire hour writing this piece of garbage.

Why don't Democrats just voluntary make a charitable donation to Uncle Sam instead of voting to raise taxes?

Because once we make something the purview of government, we are spending our money on taxes to receive that service. This significantly reduces both the available funds and attention to alternative solutions to the same problem.

If I have $100 to spend, I might just spend $25 on disaster relief. But if I've already spent $50 of that on a government whose duties (we've decided) included disaster relief, I'm going to feel much less like spending more.
